Alternative Fashion Week is
unlike any other fashion week. Open to everyone and free to
the designers to participate, the energy and atmosphere are
palpable. Running for a full week with 15 shows a day,
attracting audiences of over 10,000 and with a vibrant
fashion market of wild and wonderful accessories, this event
is a prime example of how imagination and resourcefulness
can overcome a mountain of economic obstacles and promote
sustainability.
In 1993 Spitalfields was a
deserted, run down area with a huge empty market building.
Today it is probably the most exciting cultural quarter in
London with its markets, art galleries, shops, restaurants
and bars attracting millions of visitors every year.
Alternative Fashion Week has played its part in regenerating
the area, raising its profile to a global audience and
promoting hundreds of new designers.
Alternative Fashion Week has established an international
reputation with world-wide press coverage. Every year
Alternative Arts is overwhelmed by the number of young
designers hoping to establish their label applying from all
over the country, and other parts of the world, to have a
catwalk show. We invest in innovation and ideas. This is
fashion on the edge, risky, experimental, fashion for the
future. It’s not about money or material success but
inspiration and ideology, how to have designer fashion in
the current financial climate, thrifty & thrilling, offering
a world of real opportunities. Alternative Fashion Week
provides that vital stepping stone between the graduate
shows and the mainstream fashion industry.

POP! Culture and
Fashion 1955-1976
In
the 1950s a new wave of rock-n-roll and youth culture from
America swept the country and the world. The mix of popular
images and music with art and fashion would change the way
people dressed - blurring the boundaries of commerce,
culture and style.
POP! will explore the impact of music, art and personality
on the development of the fashion of the times. From the
poodle skirts and embellished leathers of the rockers
through to the Punk era, this exhibition will take in the
cool stylings of the Mods, the high baroque of Psychedelia
and the kitsch glamour of 70s retro by designers such as Mr
Freedom and Miss Mouse.
Highlights will include items from Elton John’s personal
wardrobe, purple flares worn by Donovan, the pop-art
fashions of Mary Quant as well as Quant’s early modernist
pieces from the original Bazaar, and original pieces from
Westwood and McLaren’s Sex. Furniture, original posters and
graphics and promotional materials will help to set the
scene while an “I’m Backing Britain” display will create a
dramatic centrepiece.
The exhibition will provide new insight into 20 years of
popular culture from one of the most comprehensive private
collections of design and fashion.

The Tree of Hope Children's
Charity have joined forces with the campaigning Models of
Diversity for a unique Fashion Show to help raise funds for
children’s specialist medical treatment and therapy in the
UK. The event will be held at Leslie Ash and Lee Chapman’s
award winning champagne lounge JuJu in Chelsea.
Models of Diversity is a London-based non-profit
organization, whose mission is to change the face of fashion
and modelling. They have had great visibility in the press
with their impressive campaigning, celebrity endorsements
and most recently, their models have been used in popular
television programmes on Channel 4 in 2011.
They quote: "We advocate for more diversity in models and
demands that the fashion and marketing industries recognise
the beauty in women of all races, ages, shapes, sizes and
abilities. MoD uses top agency standard models, because not
just anyone can be a model; a successful model must still
have a special beauty and be able to sell a product.
However, we reject the notion that only a very narrow range
of ages, races, shapes and abilities are marketable."
www.modelsofdiversity.org
Lee Chapman and Leslie Ash, are hoping to attend the Fashion
Show, stating: "We are both delighted that we are able to
help the Tree of Hope Children's Charity by hosting this
Fashion Show at JuJu."
